Art Plantae was founded by Fiona Swapp, a botanical artist and art tutor based in Aberdeen, her work tells the story of specific plants and their connection to communities in the North East of Scotland.

Swapp's artistic journey of studying and creating artworks of plants began in 1990 while undertaking Graphic Art and Design studies at Ruthrieston College in Aberdeen, where she was introduced to the art of botanical painting. She has since achieved a Diploma in Botanical Illustration through the Society of Botanical Artists and more recently, a Masters in Fine Art at Gray's School of Art.

Through scientific investigation and visual exploration with photography and microscopy, uncovering the hidden features, like fractals within Sphagnum moss, Swapp interprets these exciting discoveries through sketching, poetry, printing and painting on natural materials like jute and linen.

As an ethnobotanical artist, plants stimulate Swapp's art practice through mapping of place and story, connecting plants and community.
