// SPECTRA 2025 - Northern Lights //
‘Northern Lights’ is an interactive augmented reality (AR) experience activating urban space around Aberdeen city centre as part of SPECTRA, Scotland’s Festival of Light. Now in its second year we want to continue to shine a light on creative practitioners working across multiple artforms who have a connection to the northeast.
Aberdeen based artist Craig Barrowman will collaborate with 8 creative practitioners to produce a series of AR digital artworks. These hidden artworks will be activated by the public using smartphone technology, sparking their curiosity and imagination as they travel across the Spectra festival.
Northern Lights is produced by Look Again, Gray’s School of Art, RGU on behalf of SPECTRA.
Brief:
Look Again are inviting artists from, or with a connection to, Northeast Scotland, to create dynamic digital 3D artworks to be used as assets in the Northern Lights AR experience. The artworks should consider the theme ‘Journeys’ by exploring for example: site & context, imagined realities, fun, engagement, experimentation, animation/movement, and much more. Artists should also consider the broad range of participants of all ages that attend each year and should meet the technical requirements detailed below.
At this stage we are inviting initial proposals, after which 8 artists will be commissioned to produce a digital 3D artwork.
Application requirements:
Please submit a proposal describing your response to this brief, including your initial idea and some visuals, and how you see it working as an AR experience within the festival – no more than 300 words.
Please include 3 examples of your work (with web links to any models/animations).
Fee:
£750 per artwork
Eligibility:
• Open to all artists/designers/creative practitioners, living/working in the Northeast of Scotland or with a close connection having been born or studied here.
• Applicants should have experience in creating digital 3D assets (using e.g. Blender, 3DS, ZBrush etc.)
Technical Requirements:
Proposed digital artworks must be optimised for use in an Augmented Reality app, meeting these requirements:
• under 12k polygons.
• textures 1024x1024 or smaller.
• exported as fbx or GLTF files and under 5MB.
(Do not send 3D assets at this stage - these specifications are meant as a guide for proposed artworks).
