HAAN Design Pop-Up is a high-quality showcase of creative products from from highly original independent designers and makers. This event celebrates and showcases these unique small businesses and independents in the stunning location of Aberdeen Art Gallery, winner of Art Fund Museum of the Year 2020. We have carefully curated HAAN to show a variety of high-quality and original products for this event including jewellery, ceramics, textiles, illustration, apparel, homeware and lifestyle products.

HAAN is vitally important for the creative industries, not only for the north-east but for the whole of Scotland. This event helps build confidence and capacity in small creative businesses to come face to face with the public in a safe, controlled and welcoming environment. During the event we will follow all current Scottish Government COVID guidelines and restrictions.

Please come out in force (in safe socially distanced way!) over weekend to support this super group of dedicated, hard working and highly original creatives from the north east. HAAN is vitally important as an event to help build confidence and capacity in the public and small creative businesses to come face to face in a safe, controlled environment.

HAAN will be curated across each floor of Aberdeen Art Gallery, including Cowdry Hall, to ensure social distancing measures are in place.

Aberdeen Art Gallery have a booking system in place, please ensure you book a slot before visiting HAAN. Booking is essential and can be made leading up to the event and on the day. Slots are for 2hrs max.

 
 

Meet the 2020 Designers:

Mimi Hammill

Mimi Hammill

Mimi Hammill loves to create playful patterns that make her customers’ hearts sing. She studied, worked and played in Glasgow, London, and Singapore respectively, and has been based in Aberdeen on and off since 2006. A self-employed surface pattern designer, her process typically involves photography, mark making and collage, before rapidly evolving towards digital abstraction. Hammill indulges her love of sharp line and bold colour digitally to create contemporary patterns, which go on to adorn silk, linen, cotton and Lycra apparel and accessories, all ethically manufactured in the UK.

Kevin Andrew Morris

Kevin Andrew Morris

Based in Aberdeen, Kevin Andrew Morris is often referred to as a ‘Nomadic Ceramicist’ exhibiting work nationally and internationally as well as working with a range of artists, institutions and on various public projects. Opportunities to travel, research and make work internationally have been important to Morris recently but opportunities to work locally are also perfectly situated for the development of his practice and the themes present in his work.

Initially motivated by an investigation of his own family heritage and material culture, his recent work engages with concepts of craft, material and place. Making narrative work that considers traditional and contemporary practice as well our collective connections to heritage and tradition, through ceramic slip casting and atmospheric firing.

Helen Ruth Scarves

Helen Ruth is a luxury accessories label specialising in digitally printed silk and wool scarves, printed and hand-finished in Scotland.

Each scarf starts with original hand-drawn illustrations, usually in pen and ink. It has always been a a core value of the brand to keep production local and ethical. Printing is carried out in Glasgow, and the hand-finishing in Aberdeen. Allied with these local production and manufacturing values is the brand’s signature style statement: designs are inspired by the wild Scottish landscape and animal life, as well as fairy tales and traditional folklore.  Each scarf tells its own story .  Often spiking beautiful design and illustration with subtle sinister undertones, there is always more than meets the eye!

Anne Marquiss Jeweller

Marquiss’s work is timeless and elegant. She designs and makes statement jewellery in silver and leather. The silver is etched, pierced and oxidised to create a textural finish. The leather adds colour and softness to each piece.

Marquiss’s jewellery lasts. It attracts discerning customers who enjoy expressing their individuality and flair at any age. Graduated Gray’s School of Art 1992. Maker/Teacher/Mentor.

Small Stories by Gabrielle Reith

Gabrielle Reith is an artist, illustrator and maker based in Scotland. Her work is the magical world of ‘Small Stories’ where every piece tells a tale. She makes elaborate pen & ink drawings that evolve into beautiful stories based on her & her children’s imagination, infused with traditional tales.

Small Stories artworks and designs have been created by her at her studio in Aberdeen with all her products produced in the UK, by as ethical and renewable a resource as can be found. Her current collection includes wooden brooches, enamel pins, screen printed tea towels, screen printed apparel, decorations and cards.

Fernweh

Founded in 2014 by Grays School of Art Fashion Design graduate Laura Sherriffs, Fernweh UK is an accessories brand based in Aberdeen. Laura creates handcrafted bags and accessories inspired by a sense of adventure and the Scottish wilderness. Colour palettes reflect the rich landscapes, coasts and lochans of the Highlands and North East and Laura uses natural, traditional materials such as Scottish waxed canvas, wools and leather, tying her work directly to the land. Laura uses this natural inspiration to create high quality, purpose driven bags that bring a little bit of adventure into everyday life.

Another passion for Fernweh is sustainability, and Laura strives to create a brand and products that reflect these values, creating designs that minimise waste, using offcuts where possible and making products that last. Each step of every Fernweh piece is handcrafted with the highest attention to detail in Laura's studio as part of Deemouth Artist Studios in Aberdeen.

Aubin Jewellery

Aubin Jewellery specialises in pairing precious and non-precious materials to create contemporary vibrant jewellery collections, with a strong focus on pearls and perspex elements. Aubin's designs are often inspired from natural forms which are reduced to the simplest of shapes and patterns using both digital and traditional metal working methods. Her aim is to create jewellery with an essence of preciousness and elegance which is wearable, fun and accessible.

Mags Gray Ceramics

A graduate of Grays School of Art, Mags Gray now works from her studio at Deemouth Artist Studios in Torry. She is a ceramicist who hand builds or casts pieces which are then hand decorated. Mags creates functional ware as well as ceramic narratives, Wabi Sabi is ever present in her pieces. 

Her work has been part of exhibitions with Aberdeen Artist in Aberdeen Art Gallery, The National Trust of Scotland Haddo Arts Festivals, Look Again Festivals and other exhibitions including The Designers Guild at the Mall Gallery, London. Work is available to purchase at the Fold in Banchory, Larks Gallery in Ballater and at various pop up events.

Frieda Strachan

Frieda Strachan is a self-taught fibre crafter. Primarily a weaver, she has expanded her practice to include macrame, punch needle and tufting gun work. 

Using natural yarns and lo-fi techniques, she creates textured, tactile, one-off wallhangings, as well as cushions, rugs and jewellery.

Karen is a graphic designer who is inspired by Doric speakers and the vernacular of North East Scotland. She sells a range of contemporary Doric-inspired gifts and art on Etsy.

She published her first book, ‘Doric for Beginners’ in 2017 and has just launched a new children’s book, ‘Flora the Foggie Bummer Meets the Foostie-McNasties’ . The story is written in Doric verse, and is about a feisty bumblebee who encounters a tribe of litter louts. It explores the plight of bees and what we can do to help their survival.

Megan Falconer jewellery

Megan Falconer is a silversmith and toolmaker based in Aberdeen. She focuses on creating unique, handcrafted jewellery and silverware using rocks and inspiration from the Scottish landscape. By making her own tools, Megan is able to create completely one-off pieces of silver which celebrate her surrounding coastline. Megan’s craft explores the connection between the tool, the maker and the object created. By combining traditional techniques with contemporary practices, Megan’s designs highlight the qualities of both. The designs Megan creates are process led due to the characteristics of her tools and means she can never fully anticipate the final outcomes of the pieces she creates.

Leanh La Jewellery designs and makes simple and vibrant pieces of jewellery for the everyday. Her jewellery is well designed and considered offering a more vibrant and fun way to wear jewellery.  Her inspiration comes from geometric shapes, colours, textures and patterns and she enjoys clashing colour to create jewellery that is fun and wearable. Simplicity is at the heart of her designs, designing pieces that explore clean and refined lines with the clash of vibrant colour.  The pieces range from necklaces, earrings and brooches. She makes her jewellery in small batches from her studio at home and sells online and in person through Fairs.

Rho Rho Illustrations was set up and is run by Thomas and Bridget Rhodes - an illustration & graphic design duo who met whilst studying at the Glasgow School of Art. They work from their home in Aberdeenshire, making illustrated products for the home including prints, cards, homewares and decorations.

Their style is heavily influenced by their backgrounds in engineering and industrial design, and they draw on their surroundings for their subject matter: places in Scotland that they love; the natural environment that surrounds them in rural Aberdeenshire; and everyday product design they admire.

HAAN Design Pop-Up is a high-quality showcase of creative products from local and national designers and makers. A local word for ‘hand’, HAAN Design Pop-Up will celebrate and showcase the best crafted and handmade products in the newly refurbished Aberdeen Art Gallery. We have carefully curated HAAN to show a variety of work for this event including jewellery, ceramics, textiles, illustration, apparel, homeware and lifestyle products. 

HAAN will be curated across the whole gallery, from the lower sculpture court, to the the brand-new top floor extension, including the seminar room. We have carefully selected areas in the gallery that boast beautiful city views and highlight the stunning internal architecture and artwork. Travel through the Art Gallery, take in the beautiful redevelopment and the incredible amount of work on display as well as buying from high quality designer/makers.

Anne Marquiss is a contemporary jewellery designer, working in silver, leather & weaving. She uses traditional methods to create timeless statement pieces and constantly sources inspiration from mid 20th century Art and Design, Scandinavian decorative arts and contemporary architecture. Anne’s collections are uniquely designed for each event and for HAAN she will be showcasing a variety of her contemporary designs.

Mags Gray Ceramics new collection is influenced by the ever changing blues of the North Sea and the orange offshore vessels seen daily on the horizon. Several of the ceramic forms and markings make reference to debris she finds on her walks along the beach. Each piece is hand built with stoneware and decorated with slips, ceramic pencil and glaze and fired many times, this process ensures each piece is a unique decorated piece.

Megan Falconer is a silversmith and toolmaker based in Aberdeen. Her focus is to create unique, handcrafted tools and silverware using rocks from the Scottish landscape. By choosing rocks with different characteristics and qualities, Megan uses bronze casting to create silversmith tools to produce collections of silver vessels. Megan's craft explores the connection between the tool, the maker and the object created and she will be showing a selection of handcrafted jewellery and functional objects in both silver and gold at HAAN.

Steph Liddle is a Ceramics Designer/Maker based in Dundee who creates contemporary, graphic ceramic jewellery and homewares. Every piece is handmade and hand-illustrated by Steph and is imperfectly unique, with their own subtle differences worth celebrating. Leanh La designs handmade jewellery inspired by geometric shapes. Her jewellery reflects her love of shapes and clashing of colour creating pieces that are both wearable and playful. Her current collection is laser cut from Formica and plywood and is inspired by Kandinsky‘s theory of colour using only red, yellow and blue.

Mimi Hammill

Mimi Hammill's route to creating her technicolour textiles has been anything but conventional. With a couple of science-y degrees from the university of Glasgow, she worked for several years in healthcare and health publishing. But the lure of sharp lines and clean digital shapes was ever-present. Fresh, bright colour is a key element of Mimi's work with her range extending to silk scarves, shawls, kitchen linens, cushions, and leggings.

Rho Rho are an illustration & graphic design duo based in Aberdeenshire. They make illustrated products for the home, including paper greetings, prints, decorations and personalised keepsakes. Their style is heavily influenced by their backgrounds in industrial design, and the subject matter they choose is largely guided by the places in Scotland that they have lived in and visited.

Paper Pine Tree

PaperPineTree creates beautiful and delicate creations inspired from nature and childhood memories. Originally qualified in veterinary medicine, Jenny now works full time as an artist in her log cabin studio in Aberdeen, Scotland. She tries to create everything that she imagines. She is inspired by her Canadian childhood and the Scottish countryside, especially in winter. Her PaperPineTree artworks have an emphasis on using recycled materials.
