As a mother and a designer, Maija Nygren wanted to make things that have a positive impact on future generations. Graduating as a knitwear designer, specialising in kidswear, meant that Nygren had to think outside the box. Long lasting clothing for children that so quickly grow out of their clothing? Maija Nygren’s response, inspired by early childhood theorists Montessori, Froebel and Reggio Emilia: The Convertibles kit, that invites children to participate in the making of their own clothing.
Nygren’s work ignites conversation on long-lasting clothing, as well as clothes making processes and the immense learning embedded in craft. With a tactile tool kit; chunky wooden needle (blunt and safe) and chunky yarn, children assemble these flat knitted panels together, creating real, wearable garments! This activity promotes a sense of achievement and use fine motoric, creative thinking and problem-solving skills - all fundamental building blocks for their futures.
